Nakusp: an almost-charming town

With guest blogger.... Ash!

After the treacherous climbs on Day 1 and Day 2, we started our Day three with a rather hopeful mindset, praying (literally) for no more painful mountain passes, like the Monashee.

The energy we needed to start the day came from the delicious French toast and bacon breakfast, but for some of us it wasn’t enough. Unfortunately, Jonas had a fever, and after being out cold at 7:30 the night before, he figured it would be best to skip the day’s ride.

The route started out with some easy ups and downs, some rolly hills that made the ride very pleasant.

We made it to Nakusp, hungry enough for lunch but not overly tired. On our way out of Nakusp, we tried to think of a way to describe the small town, and came up with almost charming. Charming and scenic enough that you want to visit and spend the day at the beach or the park, but not cute, quaint or big enough to want to live there.

With the energy to keep going, we made it out of Nakusp, and journeyed onto Halcyon. We didn’t get too far though before encountering one of two terrible climbs, on which we discovered, that unlike last year when Mom sang songs to go through the hills, she prayed. Yesterday was the Lord prayer, today it was ‘God you are my strength and my peace’.

At the end of the climb we encountered a beautiful and refreshing waterfall. We stepped in to cools ourselves, and it was absolutely incredible.

Our clothes did not stay dry for long though, because of the sweltering heat and the second dreadful hill.

While our afternoon ride wasn’t as pleasant as the morning, the scenery was still stunning, and we did make it, and very much enjoyed the hot springs and the scenery.

A few side stories:

While climbing up the first hill in the afternoon, mom decided to walk her bike, but was frightened by a growl (I.e. a noise in the bush) coming from the forest, and we ended up discussing strategies to get away if an animal did come from the trees. We figured best thing would be to ride fast downhill but mom wouldn’t want to give up any elevation.

While we have seen a variety of animals, like deer and snakes, we have seen even more dead animals, including a squashed turtle in the first hour of day 1, a rabbit, some small rodents, snakes and more; we even witnessed the death of a pheasant/grouse. #pheasantsdofly

Also, if you’re wondering why we would ever do this again after last year, you’ve got me. You would have thought that the Emporor would have been satisfied after last years adventure; that he would have enjoyed the five days with us and 2 weeks all alone. It seems his humility and satisfaction did not last, as we are back at it again.
